A local football club in the coastal municipality of Orihuela in Alicante province has unveiled new uniforms for the 2019-2020 season in the Primera Regional league, including a new design for it’s goalkeepers uniform sporting a rainbow emblem and the logo of a recently formed local association supporting diversity and LGBTI rights.

The club, Orihuela Deportiva, said the decision to show the rainbow emblem and include the logo of the newly formed Atrévete Asociación LGTBIQ Orihuela association on the goalee’s jersey was taken in a vote of the football club’s membership to show support for diversity and LGBT rights in the local community.

The Atrévete Orihuela association is the first of its kind in Orihuela and was formed in June of this year, less than a month after Spain’s new ultra-right VOX party, which campaigns on a strong anti-LGBT and anti-feminist platform, won 6.93 percent of the vote in local municipal elections and two seats on the 25-member municipal council.

Orihuela is also the southernmost municipality in the Valencian community’s Alicante province and abuts the region of Murcia, where in its first-ever campaign in regional elections VOX won 9.46 percent of the vote for four seats in the Murcian parliament, joining with the conservative Partido Popular (PP) and centre-right Ciudadanos parties to form a right-wing government.

Supporters of the Orihuela football club and/or diversity and LGBTI rights who wish to purchase a goalkeeper’s jersey with the rainbow design and Atrévete logo can do so online at the Orihuela Deportiva website, here.
