The Cruz Roja Española (Spanish Red Cross) on Tuesday presented the organization’s second-annual “Technology Innovation Awards for Humanitarian Ends” to three Spanish mobile startup companies at the 4YFN innovation conference during Mobile World Congress 2018 (MWC) in Barcelona.

The 2017 awards presented by the Spanish Red Cross at MWC this year recognized: FIRSTCALL, a mobile app to connect users with emergency responders, winner in the “Protecting Lives” category; the WELPY mobile app for organizing and managing volunteer workers, in the “Volunteering” category; and TRAZEO, in the “Children” awards category, an app designed to encourage children to walk to and from school as a healthier and environmentally friendlier alternative, while providing a network of adult monitors to accompany and help protect them along the way.

FIRSTCALL, the winner in the “Protection Lives” category, is a mobile app developed by FirstSoft S.L. that puts people in emergency situations in touch with local rescue and emergency services. It also instructs users on the importance of knowledge of basic first-aid and resuscitation techniques and allows people in distress to put out a call for help to other users of the app who may be in the immediate vicinity.

WELPY, presented by Pilar Olmedo Gómez, Ángel Aguilera and Francisco de Paula Sánchez, won the Red Cross award in the volunteering category for its unique approach to organizing and managing volunteers, facilitating access to information about volunteering and solving problems in the organization of volunteer workers that are often faced by not-for-profit organizations. The app also puts people who want to volunteer in touch with organizations by digitizing and making available on the app information about the organizations’ activities and events.

TRAZEO, developed by Sopinet Software, SL and winner in the “Children” category this year, allows school administrators and parents to access a network of available parents and other pre-vetted adults to accompany children walking to and from school each day. The app promotes walking to school as a healthier and environmentally responsible alternative to school buses that emit carbon dioxide and are costlier for school districts, while providing adult monitors to help protect children from harassment or bullying by other children or from adult sexual predators or other hazards they might face along the way.
