• NGO says Spain should help resettle Syrian elderly, ill, women & children •
International development aid organization Oxfam’s Spanish affiliate, Oxfam Intermón, has called on Spain’s government to accept nearly 850 refugees from war-torn Syria as part of efforts to relocate elderly, ill, women and children refugees who comprise just 10 percent of all Syrians currently dispersed in camps in Europe and North Africa.
According to Oxfam Intermón, Spain has agreed to resettle 984 Syians, which the NGO says is far fewer than the 16,000 to which Spain had previously committed and which the organisation says would be Spain’s proportional share for the resettlement of Syrian refugees in Europe, based on the country’s GDP.
Oxfam Intermón says the UN’s High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR/ACNUR) estimates there are currently 480,000 Syrian refugees in the “most vulnerable” category of elderly, ill, women and children refugees awaiting resettlement in Europe and that Spain’s share would total 850 refugees. So far, the organisation said, Spain has not taken any of the Syrian refugees it pledged to resettle in 2015.
