Spain’s Partido Animalista (PACMA) has called a demonstration on April 18th in Sevilla to protest bullfighting during the city’s annual Feria de Abril (“April Fair”) and call attention to what it says are multiple millions of euros in taxpayers’ money spent by the government of Andalucía to subsidise bullfighting in the region.

The animal-rights party says that dozens of bulls will be killed this year in Sevilla’s Plaza de la Maestranza bullring during the annual April festival and that the regional government of Andalucía, currently presided over by the Socialist party (PSOE), pays millions of euros to cover the financial losses incurred each year by organizers of the bullfights and for the re-transmission of the bullfights over Andalucía’s government-owned public television channel.

The PACMA call for protest in Sevilla follows on mid-March demonstrations by animal-rights activists over bullfights staged during Valencia’s annual Fallas festival, which this year were countered by a massive show of force by 12,000 demonstrators in support of bullfighting organized by Spain’s powerful bullfighting industry.
