• Former PSOE Defense Minister emerges as party leader in general elections
• Chacón loyalists comprise majority of PSOE-PSC candidates on Catalan list
Members of the Catalan Socialist party (PSOE-PSC) considered loyal to party politician and former Spanish Defense Minister Carme Chacón will comprise a majority on the list of regional PSOE-PSC candidates in upcoming Dec. 20 national elections.
The selection of candidates for the regional Catalan list in the national parliamentary elections follows a reported internal power struggle between pro-Chacón party members and membership loyal to current PSOE-PSC general secretary Miguel Iceta and former regional party leader Pere Navarro.
Chacón served as Spain’s Defense Minister under the previous Socialist administration of President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. Following the PSOE’s sound defeat at the hands of the conservative Partido Popular (PP) in the last general elections, she declined to stand in the PSOE national leadership contest and opted out of party politics in Cataluña, taking a political sabbatical to accept a university visiting professorship in Miami, Florida.
Since her return to active party politics, Chacón has re-emerged as the most popular leader among the PSOE-PSC membership and will lead the regional list in upcoming Dec. 20 balloting to elect a new Congress of Deputies and decide Spain’s next government.
