• Oxfam Intermón to fund local NGOs working with migrants, women & children
• Prevention of gender violence, counseling for domestic abuse victims a priority
Oxfam Intermón, the affiliate in Spain of the international development aid organization Oxfam, has announced that is launching an unprecedented program in Spain modeled on its humanitarian work in lesser-developed countries that will be aimed at combating poverty and protecting the most vulnerable in Spanish society.
The aid agency says that as part of the new program it will begin providing funding and support to other Spanish non-governmental organisations working to alleviate poverty and social exclusion among migrants living and working in Spain, estimated at some 5 million, or nearly 10 percent of Spain’s total population. At the same time, the NGO said it will work directly with organisations focused on the prevention of gender violence and provide counseling and assistance to women and children who are victims of domestic violence.
“Inequality has increased around the world in recent years and Spain is no exception,” Oxfam Intermón said in a statement, noting that 1 percent of Spain’s population holds more wealth than 80 percent of the rest of the population. The organisation said “has decided to act directly given a reality in Spain in which the (economic) crisis and austerity cuts have had a negative impact in recent years.”
