• Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Málaga, Córdoba among cities joining ban •
Nearly 300 towns and cities across Spain have joined a growing campaign promoted by a group of animals rights NGOs to ban the use of wild animals in circus acts.
The campaign, promoted by the umbrella organisation known as InfoCircos, last month presented Spain’s Ministry of Culture with a petition calling for an end to public subsidies of circus acts using wild animals.
In July, Catalonia became the first autonomous community to ban the use of animals in circuses, following the lead of 100 Catalan municipalities that voted to prohibit animal acts in circuses. Some 272 municipal councils governed by a broad spectrum of political parties have now signed on, including the cities of Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Málaga, Córdoba, Palma de Mallorca and Vitoria.
