• Party leader Pedro Sánchez to headline national campaign rallies in Barcelona
• PSOE-PSC lead candidate Carme Chacón to join in Dec. 18th campaign closer
Spain’s Socialist party (PSOE) has announced that party leader and presidential candidate Pedro Sánchez will launch both the kickoff and the closing rally of the party’s general election campaign with appearances in Barcelona, where the party hopes to regain ground lost in recent elections dominated by the issue of Catalan independence from Spain.
Sánchez will headline a Dec. 4th rally in the Barcelona suburb of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat to launch the party’s election campaign, then return on Dec. 18th for a final campaign rally in which he will share the spotlight with former Spanish Defense Minister Carme Chacón, who is top of the list of candidates for the PSOE-PSC in Cataluña.
While the PSOE’s national campaign slogan is “El cambio que une” (The Change that Unites), in Cataluna the PSOE-PSC will build its campaign on the slogan “”Somos la solución. Echemos a Rajoy” (We’re the Solution Let’s Get Rid of Rajoy), positioning itself as the only real alternative to returning the government of conservative Partido Popular (PP) Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to power.
On Friday, Sánchez participated alongside Spain’s former Socialist President Felipe Gonzalez (pictured above) in presenting the PSOE’s foreign policy platform in Madrid to an audience that included the accredited foreign diplomatic corps in the Spanish capital, as well as former Spanish Ministers of Foreign Affairs from previous Socialist governments.
