• Activist mayor of Spain’s second city seeks more funding to protect women
• Funds to go toward prevention & attention to victims of domestic violence
Barcelona’s activist mayor Ada Colau has said her administration will introduce measures this week calling for a 30 percent increase in municipal funding to combat violence against women in the Catalan capital.
Calling the fight against gender violence a priority that cuts across all social sectors, Colau made the announcement on the eve of the Nov. 25th UN-sponsored International Day to End Violence Against Women, accompanied by the Barcelona city commissioner for women, family and gender affairs, Laura Pérez.
Colau and Perez said a package of measures calling for prevention and attention to victims of domestic violence will be presented to the Barcelona city commission on Nov. 27th, accompanied by an increase in city spending of €1.1 million during 2017, representing a 27 percent increase over the municipal budget allocation related to gender violence in 2015.
