The report, titled El Estado de la Pobreza. España 2019 IX Informe anual sobre el riesgo de pobreza y exclusión (The State of Poverty. Spain 2019 IX Annual report on the risk of poverty and exclusion), released last week by the Spanish office of the European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN), says that despite a 17.5 percent increase in Spain’s economic output since the country’s economic crisis, the living conditions experienced by the poor in Spain has barely improved.
What’s more, an estimated 2.5 million people in Spain, or 5.4 percent of the country’s total population, are living in conditions of extreme poverty. In the 2019 report prepared by EAPN, that number of those living in extreme poverty has risen for the first time in three years.
There is also a gender-factor evident in the statistics on poverty in Spain, according to the EAPN report. Although the percentage of impoverished people in Spain has fallen slightly by 0.5 percent over the past year, the majority of the 190,000 individuals who have managed to climb out of poverty in the past year have been men. According to the report, the current poverty rate among men is 25.1 percent, nearly two percentage points lower than for women, which stands at 27 percent.
