► 15 million euros lets VECA program help 100,000 children at risk of poverty
► 2019 program triples number of children served lunch, activities over last year
The government of President Pedro Sánchez announced Friday that it has doubled funding this year for a summer lunch program for an estimated 100,000 children at risk of poverty across Spain.
According to the government, the children who will be fed through the program come from families at risk of poverty and face the real possibility of going without basic nourishment during summer months because because during the summer school recess they do not have access to Spain’s public school lunch program.
Following the weekly meeting of the government’s Council of Ministers on Friday, Spain’s Minister for Health and Social Welfare María Luisa Carcedo announced that the government would spend 15 million euros this year for the summer VECA program (Programa para la Garantía de los Derechos a la Alimentación, Ocio y Cultura de los Menores durante las Vacaciones Escolares , or ‘Program for the Guarantee of the Rights to Food, Leisure and Cultural Education of Minors during School Holidays).
This year, Carcedo said, the additional funding will enable the VECA program to provide summer lunches and activities for 100,000 children, nearly triple the number of children served by the program last year.
