Poverty disproportionately impacts an estimated 1.48 million single mothers and their children across Spain, according to Save the Children España, which has called on the Spanish government to take special steps to alleviate poverty and the risk of social exclusion for households run by single mothers.

According to the NGO, nearly one in every three households headed by a single mother in Spain suffers from persistent poverty that has kept them “trapped in a cycle of poverty for at least two of the past three years.”

While four out of every 10 single-parent families led by a single woman nationwide are at risk of poverty, the NGO said that fully 25 percent of all households headed by single women are currently experiencing extreme poverty. More than half the country’s estimated 1.48 million single mothers do not have sufficient monthly income to pay for eye glasses or prescription medicines should their children become ill, says the NGO.

On the eve of Mother’s Day in Spain, the NGO urged the Spanish government to recognize the special vulnerability of households headed by single mothers. The NGO has called for creation of a special category in anti-poverty legislation to provide increased benefits of up to 100 euros per month per child for single-mothers who find themselves and their families at risk of social exclusion due to poverty.
