► Activists unfurl banner critical of policies on renewables and climate change ►
Activists from Greenpeace España unveiled a giant film poster Friday on the side of the Palacio de la Música along Madrid’s Gran Vía, satirizing promises during last week’s Paris climate-change summit by Spanish President Mariano Rajoy that Spain would have a new climate-change law in 2018 and was working diligently to meet its international obligations under the Paris agreement on climate change.
With the emblazoned title Lo que Rajoy nos dejó (‘What Rajoy left us’), the banner displayed Greenpeace criticism of the Spanish government’s ongoing support for fossil fuels and the so-called “solar tax” on renewable energy production in Spain. A take-off on the 1939 film classic Gone with the Wind (titled in Spanish, Lo que el viento se llevó), the banner in downtown Madrid depicted Spanish Energy Minister Álvaro Nadal in the leading role of Rett Butler (played in the film by Clark Gable) and Rajoy as Scarlet O’Hara (played by Vivien Leigh in the original).

Rajoy came in for the ridicule from Greenpeace just two days after pledging in Paris that his government would introduce new legislation on climate change next year and that Spain would meet its commitments to combat global warming and reduce emissions by 2020 under the terms of the Paris accord. The remarks were made during a climate change summit of world leaders convened in Paris by French President Emmanuel Macron.
The Greenpeace film banner showed Nadal and Rajoy in a romantic embrace, with Nadal/Rett Butler saying “May God be my witness, I will never again shut down a coal-fired plant” and Rajoy/Scarlett O’Hara responding “Frankly, my darling, I don’t give a hoot about climate change.”
