Travellers on Spain’s national Adif railway system this week may have noticed kiosks selling fair-trade items strategically located in 10 railway stations across the country, part of campaign by Spain’s Coordinadora Estatal de Comercio Justo (CECJ), the umbrella coordinating council of fair-trade merchants nationwide, to raise awareness among Spanish consumers of the benefits of buying fair-trade products.
Through Sunday, fair-trade products sold by CECJ-member organisations Ayuda en Acción, Cáritas Española, Oxfam Intermón, PROYDE and Taller de Solidaridad are available for purchase at kiosks located in the Adif stations at Sevilla Santa Justa, Cordoba, Granada, Jerez de la Frontera, Huelva, Cadiz, Oviedo, Palencia, Valencia Nord and Vigo Guixar.
Produced by 120 artesanal and small-farmer cooperatives from 30 countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia, the foodstuffs and products on sale at the kiosks are all fair-trade certified, having been grown or produced using environmentally sustainable practices, with a guaranteed living wage under safe working conditions and using absolutely no child labor.
