• Anti-poverty activists, anti-free trade platforms unite for week of protests
• Madrid, Valencia marches Saturday to mark global day for poverty eradication
Spanish labour unions, anti-poverty activists, political parties and campaigners against global free trade are staging a week of marches, rallies and events this week and lasting through 21st October in nearly 20 cities nationwide, overlapping on Saturday with a week of trans-Atlantic anti-free trade protests in Europe and North America against the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) being negotiated between Europe and the United States.
Under the banner of Otoño en resistencia (“Autumn of Resistance”), Spanish organizers say the events aiming to highlight the root causes of poverty and underdevelopment and raising awareness about the links between global free-trade agreements and poverty will include marches on Saturday evening in Madrid, Valencia and other cities slated to coincide with the international UN-sponsored International Day for the Eradication of Poverty every year since 1987.
Throughout the week, events ranging from roundtable events to movie showings, rallies and demonstrations are being held in more than a dozen cities throughout Spain, including Sevilla, Málaga, Alicante, Castellón, Lleida, Oviedo, Gijón, Zaragoza, Palma de Mallorca and Pamplona.
