• New documentary follows Podemos from inception to Congress in 15 months
• Director says timing coincidental, not intended to influence upcoming election

A new documentary by Spanish filmmaker Fernando León de Aranoa about Spain’s populist, anti-austerity party Podemos is making its debut at the box office today amid much fanfare in the country’s media, as Spaniards prepare to go to the polls on 26th June for the second time in six months to attempt to elect a new parliament and the country’s next Prime Minister.

Titled Política: manual de instrucciones (Politics: An Instruction Manual), director León de Aranoa’s film has been edited down to a 115-minute narrative from nearly 500 hours of filming the meteoric rise of Podemos from its inception 15 months ago to the seating of Podemos Deputies in Congress in January, following the indecisive general elections held on 20th December (20-D).

León de Aranoa says he and his crew were given full access to film Podemos behind the scenes and the film’s advance reviewers generally concur that it exhibits both positive and negative aspects of the party’s leadership, its formation and growth. The timing of the film’s release on the cusp of the upcoming election campaign is coincidental, the director said, as the film was finished and originally intended for release after the 20-D general elections, before it was known that Spaniards would be asked to return to the polls a second time to choose a new government.
