In a foretaste of its election messaging for the upcoming 26th June (26-J) general election, Spain’s conservative Partido Popular (PP) released a video at the weekend labelling the centre-left Socialist party (PSOE) an anti-austerity Podemos party as “extremists” that have placed the unity of Spain at risk, provoked the flight of private companies from regions where they currently govern, and denied parents the right to choose how they want to educate their children.

The two-minute pre-campaign video was launched Friday by Partido Popular, which remains in the lead in the most recent voter opinion polls and is expected to win the most votes in the 26-J election. It begins by asking question, “What has happened in the autonomous communities where Podemos and the PSOE have governed together?” and answers by singling out for criticism municipal and regional governments in the communities of of Castilla-La Mancha, Valencia, Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Aragon and Navarre, in which the Socialists and Podemos govern either in coalition or with the support of the other party.

Election campaign observers say the messaging points to the PP’s anticipated 26-J campaign strategy to paint the right-wing party as the only responsible choice for the electorate, while depicting a vote for the centre-left PSOE as support for a radical “extremist” left government that will lead to private sector disinvestment, rising taxes, restricted freedoms and the breakup of Spain by independence-minded regionalist forces.
