The regional government of Valencia has announced it will spent 5.9 million euros on a new plan designed to combat energy poverty among the Valencian public, which in its initial phase will help an estimated 12,000 Valencian families meet their bi-monthly energy bill payments and an additional 2,500 families with their monthly rent payments.

Valencian President Ximo Puig presented the plan, saying it is the first order of official business in 2016 for the current administration, which assumed power in Valencia following May 2015 parliamentary elections in the region.

Puig urged municipalities throughout Valencia to sign up to participate in the program, as funds will be disbursed to families who need help with their energy bills through the local government authorities across Valencia.
