Spain’s Environmental Science Association (Asociación de Ciencias Ambientales, or ACA) has launched an online crowdfunding campaign to enable it to carry out a third annual study on Energy Poverty nationwide, investigating the degree to which Spaniards hit hard by the country’s economic crisis are unable to pay their winter energy bills.

According to the association, recent studies have shown that more than 54 million Europeans are unable to maintain their homes or apartments to a suitable temperature during the coldest winter months. Of those 54 million, some million live in Spain – ranking Spain fourth-highest among its European neighbors in terms of individuals suffering from energy poverty.

The ACA has authored two previous studies of energy poverty in Spain in 2012 and 2014. The association is seeking online crowdfunding support to help it complete the third study, which will be published in March 2016.
