Amnistía Internacional España (Amnesty International Spain) is the Spanish section of the global human-rights campaigning organization, Amnesty International, and coordinates the organisation’s work in defence of human rights in Spain and abroad from its Spanish headquarters in Madrid.
Amnesty España has nearly 78,000 members and partners in Spain, without some 2,200 activists spread across 120 local and university groups nationwide. The organisation also maintains in Spain a School Network for Human Rights and its Urgent Action Network of more than 85,000 members is activated when prisoners of conscience around the world face situations of extreme risk of incarceration, torture or execution for their ideas.
Nearly 500,000 activists collaborate in signing petitions to governments, authorities and corporations through the AI España website and the organisation has about half a million followers on social networking sites, where it promotes conversations and conducts campaigns related to human rights.
Amnesty International Spain is governed by a General Federal Assembly of members that meets annually and a seven-member volunteer Federal Executive Committee, which oversees the regular operations of Amnesty España. The organisation’s staff in the Madrid office is led by a professional executive director, Esteban Beltrán, who directs the work of activists and volunteers on AI Spain’s behalf.
