accemThe Asociación Comisión Católica Española de Migraciones (ACCEM, or ‘Spanish Catholic Committee on Migration’), is an accredited not-for-profit organisation established in 1990 as an agency of Spain’s Roman Catholic church with the goal of providing care and assistance to refugees, immigrants and people at risk of social exclusion.

Through an agreement reached in 1992 with Spain’s National Institute of Social Services (IMSERSO), ACCEM helped to create a nationwide network of Centres for Refugees (CAR), consisting of individual flats and group shelters designed to provide adequate care and temporary shelter in the hosting of refugees arriving to Spain. Currently, ACCEM jointly manages and administers the network of CAR centres along with CEAR (the Spanish Committee for Refugee Aid) and the Spanish Red Cross.

ACCEM’s work is based fundamentally on respect for human rights and dignity of individuals and peoples and strives in its work with refugees to promote pluralism and intercultural diversity in Spanish society, to defend the rights and freedoms of all people and to strive toward creating a more just society with equality of opportunity for everyone. Putting people first before political, social and economic structures, ACCEM places a priority on working toward social inclusion of Spain’s immigrant and refugee population and toward obtaining equal rights and responsibilities for refugees and immigrants in all areas of Spanish society.

ACCEM works openly with government agencies and other public and private sector organisations and regularly shares information on the management of its budgets and resources internally and to external auditors to guarantee transparency and effectiveness in its work with refugees, migrants and people suffering social exclusion in Spain.
