Less than 24 hours prior to Pamplona’s annual ‘Running of the Bulls’ festival made famous worldwide by American novelist Ernest Hemingway, animal-rights activists from the United States, France and Sweden joined their Spanish counterparts in a dramatic protest to draw attention to the suffering and bloody death experienced by bulls in the annual event.

U.S.-based international animal-rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) joined Barcelona-based AnimaNaturalis in convening the protest, which saw participants holding signs in English and Spanish denouncing the “blood bath for bulls” and pouring buckets of simulated blood over their half-naked bodies in protest for the annual spectacle.

AnimaNaturalis director Aída Gascón says most international observers think of the annual ‘Running of the Bulls’ during Pamplona’s San Fermín festival as just that and do not realize that after the run through the streets the bulls then meet a bloody and cruel death in the bullring. The organization has set up a website and petition at SanFerminsinsangre.org with more information for those wishing to join the campaign to end the annual event.
