• November jobless figures show year-on-year improvement
• But, numbers still shy of replacing 1.5 mn jobs lost since Rajoy took office
As the conservative governing Partido Popular (PP) of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy touts improved employment figures in the run-up to the general election, the latest numbers show the party has fallen 25,000 jobs short of where Spain’s workforce level in 2011, when Rajoy took office.
November 2015 unemployment figures just released shows the number of jobless nationwide has fallen by 400,000 over the past four years and currently stands at some 4.1 million unemployed Spaniards.
According to the most recent Active Population Survey (EPA) figures, the 400,000 reduction in the unemployment rate is simply due to a fall in the number of Spaniards considered to be of active working age.
Since Spain entered its second recession in 2011, an estimated 1.5 million jobs have been lost and the slow economic recovery has still left Spain some 25,000 jobs shy of the number of people employed nationwide in 2011, when Rajoy and the PP took over the reins of government.
