Más País is a centre-left political party and electoral platform created in the run-up to Spain’s most-recent 10th November 2019 general elections.
The party was formed as a national extension of Más Madrid, the regional party in the Spanish capital and surrounding Madrid regional community by former Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena and former Podemos leader Íñigo Errejón.
The rank-and-file membership of Más Madrid voted overwhelmingly in September 2019 to present candidates at the national level in Spain’s upcoming 10th November general election and the new Más País party fielded candidacies alone or in coalition with other regional parties and movements in 18 of Spain’s most popular provinces nationwide.
While widely expected to win at least five seats or as many as 10 congressional seats in the election, Más País underperformed expectations and pre-election polling projections.
While winning 577,055 votes nationwide for a respectable first-time-out 2.4 percent share of the total vote, the party’s vote total translated into just 3 seats in Spain’s 350-member national Congress of Deputies — insufficient to form its own parliamentary group in Congress and relegating its deputies to the “mixed group” of deputies, whose parties failed to meet the five-seat threshold necessary to have their own identity and receive congressional subsidies for offices and staff.
