• First Fair Trade shops opened in Cordoba, Donostia-San Sebastián in 1986 •
Spain’s National Fair Trade Coordinating Council (Coordinadora Estatal de Comercio Justo, or CECJ) has launched a yearlong campaign to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the opening of the first Fair Trade shops in Spain and to increase awareness of the ongoing need for fair, sustainable and just commerce in Spain and abroad.
After the first ‘Comercio Justo’ shops were opened in 1986 in Córdoba and in the Basque city of Donostia-San Sebastián, the Fair Trade movement saw a rapid expansion in the 1990s and has grown steadily since across Spain, reaching sales of 33.2 million euros in 2014 across the movement’s 140 shops and kiosks and 12 online sites in Spain today.
With more than 125 employees and 2,000 volunteers staffing the shops nationwide, the Fair Trade movement stresses ethical business and commercial practices, environmental sustainability, social justice and respect for human rights in the products carried by the shops and in the assistance channeled back through sales to producers and communities worldwide.
