• Laws stem from pro-independence resolution declared ‘unconstitutional’ •
Members of the Catalonia’s small anti-capitalist CUP party voted with the pro-independence Junts pel Sí coalition on Wednesday in the Catalan parliament to set the legislative wheels in motion for creation of three new laws seen as central to the secessionists’ drive for independence from Spain.
The three laws — which would lay the groundwork for a new Catalan national Constitution and create a separate Treasury office and Social Security administration for Catalonia — stem from a Nov. 9th independence resolution passed by the Catalan parliament that has since been declared unconstitutional by Spain’s Constitutional Court.
A specfic calendar for approval of the news laws was not agreed in the parliamentary session yesterday, but new Catalan president Carles Puigdemont has said the Catalan parliament is still aiming to complete preliminary work on legislation that would position it to unilaterally declare independence from Spain within the next 18 months.
