• High-profile judge takes leave of absence to run on Podemos ticket
• Juan Pedro Yllanes was slated to preside over trial involving King’s sister
The judge who was scheduled to preside over the upcoming high-profile corruption case implicating Cristina de Borbón, sister of the current King of Spain, has agreed to run for a Congressional seat in upcoming 20 December general elections on the ticket of insurgent left political party, Podemos.
Judge Juan Pedro Yllanes was scheduled to preside in the so-called Nóos corruption trial involving King Felipe’s sister, whose husband has been charged along with a business partner in a case over alleged kickbacks for contracts involving a not-for-profit foundation that he operated.
Yllanes, who is known for taking tough stances against real-estate corruption, and in favor of the environment and women’s rights, will lead Podemos’ regional parliamentary list of candidates from the Balearic Islands. In order to run on the Podemos ticket, Yllanes recused himself from the Noos trial and was a granted an exception allowing him to run for office by Spain’s General Council for Judicial Affairs (CGPJ).
