A majority of voters who supported the Socialists (PSOE) and new-left anti-austerity party Podemos in the Dec. 20th general election would look favorably on a “progressive” governing coalition between the two parties, according to Metroscopia poll results published over the weekend by the newspaper El País.
Among PSOE supporters, nearly 6 in 10 (57 percent) polled by Metroscopia said they would look favorably on a pact with Podemos; an even greater majority of Podemos supporters (72 percent), said they would support their party forming a governing coalition with the Socialists.
Strongly opposed to such a left-wing coalition government, however, were supporters of other political parties, particularly those who voted for centre-right Ciudadanos (84 percent opposed) and those who voted for the conservative Partido Popular, or PP (94 percent opposed), the latter having won the greatest number of votes (7.2 million) and currently holds the largest number of seats in Congress.
