• Pending legislation foresees fines up to 30,000 euros for severe offenses •
A legislative bill slated for approval by the regional government of Murcia next month will impose stiff fines of up to 30,000 euros for the mistreatment of animals, with serious offenses such as the organization of animal fights or the neglect and abuse of animals receiving the most severe penalties.
The legislation, which was introduced in the last session of the regional parliament and is expected to be passed in February in the new legislative session, will ban the use by owners of violence or overtly aggressive behavior in the training of animals, and will prohibit keeping or transporting animals in unventilated vehicles that are not adapted for the animals’ safety and welfare.
Euthanasia, or “putting down” an animal, will only be allowed under the new legislation for health reasons or to spare an animal from suffering, and then only at the hands of a licensed veterinarian.
