• PSOE leader wants Portugal-style coalition to oust Spain’s Partido Popular •
The leader of Spain’s Socialist party (PSOE), Pedro Sánchez, traveled to Portugal on Thursday to meet with Portuguese Socialist prime minister Antonio Costa for advice on how his Spanish party might put together a broad-left coalition to oust from power the ruling conservative Partido Popular (PP) of acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.
In November, the Portuguese Socialist party’s Costa managed to put together a coalition similar to the one Sánchez seeks for Spain, having negotiated three separate accords with left-of-center parties in order to create the Socialist-led political coalition that now governs Portugal.
Following the two leaders’ meeting in Lisbon, Sánchez told a press conference that his party would not join a “grand alliance” with the PP as proposed by Rajoy, but instead seeks a coalition to bring together “all the progressive forces that want to change Spain and repair the damage the right wing has done over the last four years.”
