Valencia’s weeklong ‘Fallas’ festival has paid tribute to Spain’s LGBT community and to Spanish women with Tuesday’s version of the daily mascleta fireworks extravaganzas in deploying the rainbow colors of the LGBT movement and the color pink for women in a crowd-dazzling display at midday in the city’s central Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
The Vulcano pyrotechnics team organizing Tuesday’s mascleta (see video below) said they had chosen the rainbow color in tribute to Spain’s LGBT community, which they said has faced a long struggle to claim equal rights for LGBT people in the face of marginalization by Spanish society. The color pink was chosen to honor women in Spain, who likewise have struggled for equality in Spain’s traditionally macho society.
The annual ‘Fallas Valencianas’ festival that each year is held in conjunction with the feast day of Saint Joseph, Valencia’s patron saint, kicked off last weekend and runs through Sunday 19th March with daily activities and events, including fireworks displays, burning of the giant ‘fallas’ statues, processions and parades (see the weeklong program of events, below).
