• Marches, rallies and proclamations against gender violence held nationwide
• News of latest murder brings total of gender violence victims to 40 this year
Tens of thousands of people marched, rallied and gathered for the reading of proclamations against gender violence on Friday in more than 50 cities and scores of towns across Spain to mark the UN-designated International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, held each year to condemn and raise awareness of the fact that women around the world continue to be subject to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence.
Demonstrators took to the streets nationwide to protest the ongoing violence against women in Spain, with marches and rallies held in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla and dozens of regional and provincial capitals, including Alicante, Burgos, Castellón, Cuenca, Bilbao, San Sebastián, Pamplona, Santiago de Compostela, Lugo, Ourense, Vigo, Girona, Lleida, Granada, Huesca, Lanzarote, Logroño, Santander, Murcia, Mérida, Zaragoza and Huelva.
The protests and rallies occurred in the wake of the latest violent death of a woman in Spain at the hands of a domestic partner, with the news Thursday of the murder of a 26-year-old woman by her partner in Fuenlabrada, in the community of Madrid, bringing the total number of women victims of gender violence and domestic abuse in Spain to 40 so far this year.
