• Amigos de la Tierra España ~ Friends of the Earth •
Amigos de la Tierra España (Friends of the Earth Spain) is a non-governmental organisation founded in 1979 as the Spanish affiliate branch of Friends of the Earth International (FoEI), a global network of environmental organizations with more than 1.5 million members working in 74 countries across five continents.
One of the top five environmental NGOs in Spain today, Amigos de la Tierra works to promote and defend social and environmental justice. Its work is focused principally on the areas of climate change and renewable energy, food resources and agriculture, economic justice, natural resources and waste management, and cooperative development campaigns.
As part of its efforts, Amigos de la Tierra denounces and pressures Spanish and multinational corporations and lobbies government agencies to employ sustainable business practices and enact and enforce environmental regulations, acting through political pressure campaigns, dissemination of information via the news media and using environmental education programs within communities to engage the public and raise awareness of the need to create a more just and sustainable society.
Amigos de la Tierra works locally across Spain through local groups of members and volunteers, with specific presence in the regional communities of Andalucía, Aragón, Galicia, the Balearic Islands and Madrid. At the European level, Amigos de la Tierra coordinates its efforts with Friends of the Earth Europe, the European federation of 31 national organisations and thousands of local groups belonging to FoEI global network.
