American actor Richard Gere attended the signing ceremony in Valencia this week of an agreement between the city government and the RAIS Fundación (RAIS Foundation) to provide housing for 404 homeless individuals estimated to be sleeping on the streets of Spain’s third largest city.

Gere’s partner, Alejandra Silva, is a longtime supporter of the the foundation, which works to alleviate homelessness throughout Spain. Prior to Spain’s November 2015 general election, Gere appeared in a brief promotional video for the foundation calling on country’s next president to work to find a solution to help the more than 35,000 homeless people estimated to be living on the streets of Spain.

Under the agreement signed with the city, the RAIS Fundación will work with city agencies to identify homeless people throughout the city and provide individual, long-term shelter and the support needed to sustain themselves in permanent housing.
