• Two women assaulted, cameras smashed by crowd at Correbous event
• Second incident in 15 days against AnimaNaturalis activists in Ebro Delta
Two activists of the Barcelona-based international animal-rights group AnimaNaturalis were assaulted while filming a Correbous bull-baiting festival in Catalonia’s Ebro Delta region last weekend, bringing to six the number of the group’s members assaulted by bull festival aficionados over the past 15 days.
The two women activists were physically assaulted and had their cameras broken by spectators at a bull festival in the town of Mas de Barberans, in Catalonia’s southern province of Tarragona, where they were sitting quietly in the stands filming as part of AnimaNaturalis’ monitoring efforts to ensure Correbous festivals in Catalonia and Valencia adhere to legal requirements of security and safety for the animals.
Catalonia’s regional Mossos d’Esquadra police force arrested three men and a woman from the nearby town of Sant Carles de la Ràpita on charges of intimidation, injury and damages, with an aggravated assault charge of discrimination, later releasing the four on bail. In mid-April, AnimaNaturalis denounced similar intimidation and threats against four of the group’s activists in the town of Aldover, also in Catalonia’s Ebro Delta region.
