A micro-brewery in the north of England run by a former Durham miner is marking the 80th anniversary of the start of Spain’s 1936-39 Civil War with the launch of a commemorative beer honoring the thousands of International Brigades volunteers who fought on the Republican side in the war against the Nationalist forces of Gen. Francisco Franco.

The new ‘Brigadista’ beer from ex-miner Chris Graham’s Black Hill Brewery in Durham will carry the Republican fighters’ slogan ¡No pasaran! on its label and is being launched on May 1st in Manchester and London in conjunction with the British anti-fascist organization Hope Not Hate.

Partial proceeds from the sale of ‘Brigadista’ beer are said to be going toward funding educational work by Hope Not Hate and by the International Brigade Memorial Trust (IBMT), which works to keeps alive the memory and spirit of the 2,500 men and women from Britain and Ireland who volunteered to fight fascism during Spain’s Civil War.
