Animal rights party Equo has called on municipal authorities in Azpeitia in the Basque Country to stop their support for organised fights between rams in the local bullring in which the animals are made to head-butt each other until one loses consciousness and the other “wins.”
Equo has circulated a video reportedly shot by a French tourist showing various ram fights organised in the town’s bullring, which locals say has been going on for generations and defend as part of Basque “culture” in the area.
Denouncing the ram fights as both cruel and promoting suffering as a form of entertainment, Equo says the spectacles are in violation of Spain’s national laws on Animal Protection and the organizing of Public Events and Recreational Activities and has called on local authorities and the Basque regional government to ban the ram fights in the future.
