Andalusia has become the first region in Spain to reach the European Union’s 2020 target for member countries of meeting 20 percent of all energy demand through renewable sources, according to figures released by the Andalusian Energy Agency.

According to the agency, Andalusia produced 19.5 percent of all its energy needs from renewable sources at end-2015 and the region has become a “leader in thermo-solar power production, both from tower technology and through parabolic cylinder collectors.”

Nationwide, Spain produces 2,300 MW from thermo-solar energy, with some 43 percent of that capacity (997.4 MW) produced in Andalusia, which currently boasts 22 thermo-solar plants and two experimental facilities in operation in the provinces Cádiz, Córdoba, Granada y Sevilla.
