• One-third of Madrid region’s funding of bullfighting activities cut
• Opposition shifts 414,000 euros to support victims of gender violence
An opposition measure led by insurgent-left party Podemos has forced the conservative Partido Popular (PP) majority in Madrid’s regional government to reassign 414,000 euros previously earmarked for bullfighting-related activities and use the funds to support victims of domestic abuse and gender violence.
As a result of a regional budget amendment proposed by Podemos and supported by other opposition parties, the move will redirect one third of the 1.3 million euros the PP had assigned to the organization and promotion of bullfighting in the Madrid region.
The funding will now be used in the training of personnel in the treatment of domestic abuse situations, to hire interpreters and pay for psychological counseling for victims of gender violence.
As a result of the cut to region’s support for bullfighting-related activities, local governments will no longer receive subsidies from Madrid’s regional government to organize bullfights, nor will the regional government itself finance events and awards programs related to bullfighting.
