• Police capture 30 members of Nigerian sex-trafficking ring in Barcelona
• Nigerian women seeking work in Spain forced into prostitution by group
Cataluña’s regional Mossos d’Esquadra police force have cracked down on a criminal gang believed to be forcing Nigerian women into sex slavery in the Catalan capital, Barcelona.
In an early morning police raid, the Mossos arrested some 30 Nigerian nationals believed to be affiliated with the Supreme Eiye Confraternity, a group previously charged with human trafficking and sexual slavery involving Nigerian women offered as prostitutes in Barcelona’s downtown area
Investigators say the group charges Nigerian women large amounts of money in exchange for the promise of helping them to immigrate to Spain and find employment. Instead, once in Barcelona the women find themselves forced to work as prostitutes for the group, some of whose members are already standing trial on previous human trafficking-related charges.
