• Non-governmental groups encourage ‘solidarity’ as response to world’s woes
• Volunteering is way to give ‘most valuable resource, your time’ to help others

Volunteer workers at non-governmental organisations across Spain are getting an #AplausoGlobal (‘Global Applause’) today, as their efforts are being recognized both here and worldwide as part of the UN-designated International Volunteer Day, celebrated each year on Dec. 5th and commemorated this year on social media with messages of support using the hashtag #GlobalApplause (‘Gran Aplauso’).

Spain’s umbrella Plataforma del Voluntariado de España (‘Platform of Volunteer Workers in Spain’), representing most of the non-government and charitable organisations involved in anti-poverty, development, disaster relief and human rights work at home and abroad, said the annual day commemorating the work of volunteers highlights solidarity “as an antidote against injustice” and encourages helping others  out of a sense of solidarity as the best response to troubles of the world through the use of “the most valuable of resources, which is your time.”

The group called on Spaniards to continue to be generous in giving of their time throughout the coming year, urging them to “reclaim this solidarity, individually, collectively and through social organizations that represent the interests of the most vulnerable people” in Spanish society and around the world.
