• Major ‘green’ NGOs press for commitment from parties on environment •

As Pedro Sánchez of the Socialist party (PSOE) continues with meetings aimed at forming a progressive coalition government, the five largest environmental organisations working in Spain have urged the country’s political leaders to place environmental and social justice issues at the forefront of policy negotiations among the possible coalition partners.

Friends of the Earth, Ecologistas en Acción, Greenpeace, SEO/BirdLife and WWF have joined together to call on Sánchez to negotiate the creation of a new post of Vice-President for Sustainability and a new Ministry of the Environment during PSOE’s talks with other paties to form a progressive government.

The environmental groups also called on the political parties to create and pass two new pieces of legislation, a Law of Environmental Finance and a Law of Energy Transition to renewable energy sources, once the new Congress gets fully underway. The NGOs’ appeal echoes a similar call made to all political parties in Spain in the run-up to Dec.20th general elections.
